Is your home closer to any major road? Do your children have a greater exposure to the traffic congestion?
If yes, then it is high time for you to give a second thought to the location of your home. Moreover you need to try to keep your kids far away from the air pollution caused by heavy traffic, if you really want to save your children from the vicious tentacles of allergies and asthma.
Link between Traffic Exhaust and Allergies & Asthma
You might be thinking that how asthma and allergies are associated with traffic exhaust and with the location of your residence. Here are few points that can provide with a clear understanding about the risk factors.
- Asthma and wheeze are strongly related with residential proximity to major traffic zone or a major road. These associations appear to be the strongest among the kids with no hereditary problem of asthma; who has been living at the same location since the early stage of life.
- Basically, the highest risk involves in those children who live adjacent to the congested traffic zones, and risk decreases if the residential location is at approximately 150-200 meter away from the main road.
- Greater risks of asthma are associated with the long-term residence within the distance of 75 meter from a main road, as it has been among children.
- Kids exposed to the high levels of pollution caused by the traffic congestions at the age of 1-2 years are highly susceptible to develop pollen allergies, asthma and impaired respiratory function.
Facts That A Research Study Reveals about Asthma & Air Pollution
The above mentioned points are basically some of the findings of a recent research study that has been conducted by the BAMSE project (The project is run by the Stockholm County Council’s unit for Occupational and Environmental Medicine and the Institute of Environmental Medicine at Karolinska Institute).
The study suggests that more exposure to traffic pollution can heighten respiratory problems as well as it is also responsible in reducing lung volumes in kids with asthma. According to the researchers, the road and traffic density leave a deep impact on children’s respiratory symptom and lung function.
How The Research Is Conducted?
Around 4000 children have been monitored from the time of their birth in order to track the actual fact whether the exposure to heavy traffic pollution during the first phase of their life is really intensifying the risk of developing allergies and asthma.
The experiment has been done by measuring the levels of traffic exhaust at a particular site o their home and then comparing it to a site that has lesser traffic exposure.
What Does The Study-result Imply?
The results imply that the kids exposed to the places having high vehicular density and high concentration of those pollutants, are 60% more likely to suffer from persistent asthma symptom. These kids are highly prone to be allergic to pollen allergies including other airborne allergies too.
