What is voice therapy?
Voice therapy is a primary key for treatment of voice disorders. A speech-language pathologist (SLP) is the one who give the speech and language therapies. Voice therapy itself is one of many types of speech and language therapies.
Physicians use three different tools to treat voice disorders. Voice therapy is included as one of them. The complete tools are as follows:
- Voice therapy
- Surgical treatments
- Medications
Voice Therapy is prepared according to the patient’s needs
Each person has different needs. Therefore, a speech therapist will tailor the therapy according to each patient’s needs. The conditions of the patient, for example type and severity of the voice disorder are also considered when a speech therapist designs the therapy.
Who provides the therapy?
A voice therapist (Also known as vocal therapist) is the person who provides voice therapy. As a matter of fact, a voice therapist is an SLP who concentrates on voice area.
What are the roles of a voice therapist?
The roles of a voice therapist are as follows:
- Recovery after surgery
- Avoid the reappearance of voice disorder
- Help the patient in providing the tools to treat voice disorders (Surgery, medications and voice therapy).
- In very particular conditions, surgery can be the only treatment that able to recover the patient’s voice
- In very particular conditions, a voice therapist is still able to avoid surgery when voice therapy produces satisfactory improvement of the voice disorder.
Lastly, we shall bear in mind that voice therapy alone might be unable to recover the voice back to normal condition in all cases.
