When allopathic medicines don’t come up to scratch, what else can one do except to search for age-old and time-tested kitchen remedies? Why don’t we look in the kitchen for our medicines instead of visiting doctors? Well, this article gives you a chance to make your own beauty products from what is available in your kitchen cupboard and fridge.
If you have tired or puffy eyes, make a compress of grated raw potato or cucumber in a piece of gauze or thin material or apply the pieces directly over your closed eyelids. Lie back and rest for a few minutes.
Eat half an avocado and make a face pack of the other half for good skin. Mash it with lemon juice to prevent it from rusting.
For itchy skin after the winter season, add two handfuls of finely milled porridge oats to your bath. Oats are good for treating eczema, inflammation and sun damage. Alternatively, you could also use camomile tea bags to your bath.
To soften your hands and feet, use almond oil by massaging a few drops of it daily. Add a tablespoon of honey to it, for a more intensive treatment. Apply the lotion at bedtime and keep it on overnight. Wear cotton gloves with plastic bags tied over them.
To cure arthritis, eat one serving of fresh fish or fish oil capsules or a few walnuts.
For asthma, mix one teaspoon of honey with 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon and take it at bedtime. Do not take aspirin, as this may bring on an asthma attack.
To overcome the effects of bad breath, boil some cinnamon bark in a cup of water. Store it in a bottle in your bathroom and use as a mouthwash everyday.
For bladder infection, take a bag of fresh or frozen cranberries and boil them in water. When cool, drink the liquid without adding sugar. You will be relieved of kidney problems.
For relief from bladder stones, boil two figs in a cup of water and drink daily for a month.
For bruises to heal, slice a raw onion and place over the bruise. Also use tea tree oil topically.
As a rule, keep lavender and mint plants growing at home. When you feel a headache coming on, cut a couple of stalks of lavender and make an infusion by steeping them in boiling water for five minutes. Sip slowly.
As a digestive after a rich meal, follow the same procedure with mint as you did with lavender.
If you or a family member is depressed, for relief try cooking 3/4 cup of cooked spinach a day. Perhaps you are deficient in B vitamins.
If you’ve got the runs, eat boiled sweet potatoes seasoned with salt and pepper before bedtime.
Aren’t these easy to follow? With relief round the corner, any sickness can be cured in the kitchen-your very own clinic.
