This article will discuss oral allergy syndrome. What is this condition, how it manifests and how it can be treated.

    What is Oral Allergy Syndrome?

Oral allergy syndrome is a type of food allergy. This condition causes a reaction in and around the mouth or in the throat. It comes about from eating fresh fruit, such as apple or nuts and vegetables. It usually develops when in early adulthood.

    Who is Affected?

This condition often develops with people who are already affected by allergies. Especially pollen allergy is something that can easily cause oral allergy syndrome.

    Symptoms of Oral Allergy Syndrome

    – Hives
    – Rash
    – Difficulty breathing
    – Swollen airway
    – Inflammation
    – Redness
    – Coughing
    – Itching or burning sensation around mouth
    – Eye watering and redness
    – Vomiting
    – Diarrhea
    – Cramps
    – Wheezing

Symptoms of this condition usually occur within minutes of ingesting the food. If the symptoms occur in the gastric tract, it is possible to suffer from stomach problems later.

    How to Avoid Symptoms?

In order to avoid symptoms it is possible to use foods which have been boiled or frozen. These methods are often enough to stop the proteins in the food from causing the symptoms.

If the person suffering from oral allergy syndrome is also suffering from another allergy, it is necessary to treat the other allergy first. This is because that allergy is most likely the contributing factor to the oral food allergy that the person suffers from. The foods that cause the symptoms must be avoided. In certain cases it is possible to avoid reactions to the food if it is pealed first. This is because the food might contain the proteins that are responsible for the symptoms, in the peel.

Allergy immunotherapy is one way to treat the illness. This is done by subjecting the sufferer of the condition to small doses of the allergen over a period of time in order to create a resistance in the body to the allergen.
