Causes and symptoms of pink eye
The most common types of conjunctivitis or pink eye and their causes and symptoms are listed below:
- Allergic conjunctivitis: These are caused by allergens such as pet dander, dust, etc. Their symptoms include redness, irritation, excessive tearing and itching in both the eyes. The nose may also become itchy, runny and stuffy.
- Bacterial conjunctivitis: As the name suggests, it is caused by the bacterial infections. They often spread and infect both the eyes. They cause a heavy discharge which sometimes may be greenish. Affected individuals may also develop crusting on their eyelids.
- Viral conjunctivitis: They are caused due to viral infections and it usually affects only in one eye. It causes light discharge and excessive watering. Sometimes crusting on eyelids can occur.
Symptoms of pink eye
- Redness in inner eyelid or in the white of the eye
- Itchy eyes
- Watery eyes
- Pain in the eyes
- Inflammation or irritation of the conjunctiva
- Increased amount of tears
- Swelling of the eyelid and eyes
- Blurred vision
- Yellow secretions stuck the eyelids when an infected individual sleeps
- Whitish, yellowish or greenish thin or thick discharge or secretions from the eyes
- Inability to look into any light source directly
Causes of pink eye
- Bacteria: Streptococcus and Staphylococcus. Newborns get infected in the birth canal with bacteria.
- Virus: Haemophilus influenza
- Allergens: cosmetics, fumes, drugs, airborne chemicals, dust mites, etc.
