Do you know what is YAG laser surgery and when you usually undergo it? YAG(Yttrium-Aluminum-Garnet) is a laser that is used to treat acute cases of glaucoma, But, mostly it is being used to treat patients post their cataract operations. YAG surgery is a very common vision correction surgery.
What is YAG Laser Surgery: Yag laser surgery is performed whenever a patient develops any kind of obstruction in his/her eye.
- These vision obstructions are usually known to develop post a cataract surgery in every 3 out of 4 people. YAG laser removes the obstructions and corrects the patients vision.
- Also, in patients suffering from acute eyed glaucoma, the pressure in the eye is tremendously high due to the blockage of normal flowing fluids within the eye.
Why YAG Laser Surgery: Usually in a cataract surgery, the surgeon has to perform lens implant to ensure the retina’s safety. A cataract is nothing but a lens which clouds a person’s vision.
- In order to enable the lens implant, the surgeon has to leave a thin membrane while operating on the cataract.
- This thin membrane could cause a recurring blurriness in the patient’s vision. YAG laser surgery is thus required to get rid of these membranes enabling the patients an unobstructed clear vision.
YAG Surgery and It’s Complications: This surgery is not at all a complicate one. It is some kind of a regular office desk job. Not much time is required to perform this surgery and the patient can walkout right after he’s done with.
- Before a YAG surgery, the patients’ eyes are first dilated with the help of drops. Then using the laser, an incision is made in the eye(precisely on the membranes). Upon focussing the laser the patients’ post-operation blurriness is alleviated.
- In most cases, patients observe a clarity in vision right after surgery. Usually, a low pain and low cost surgery that helps the patients to get back into their daily routine without any delays.
- If at all there are any complications, mostly the patients would experience eye floaters after undergoing a YAG surgery. But, they too get eliminated within a few days or weeks. Not frequently, but eye pressure may increase. Use of proper eye drops would alleviate even this issue. In the rarest of cases there might be a possibility of retinal detachment(especially if the surgery is for myopic s and younger age patients).
It must be clear by now, what is YAG laser surgery. One of the most common forms of eye surgery, very economical and least time consuming not obstructing the patient’s day-to-day work.
