Of all the five senses, vision is the least developed one at birth. The visual acuity in infants is measured as 20/300 and thus stimulating vision in your infants is necessary.
By trying to stimulate the vision, you can help the baby improve it’s eye sight faster when compared to babies who do not under go any visual stimulation.
Importance of Visual Stimulation: Importance of developing an early good vision is paramount. By making sure your infant develops his/her eye sight faster, you would help the infant perceive his/her surroundings in a better way. This arouses their curiosity and attentiveness.
This way you can help them develop their visual acuity to 20/20.
Also, it helps the infant to bond with his/her parents. All this is possible by allowing the baby to respond to a visual stimulus which would automatically accelerate their vision.
Stimulating Vision in Your Infants: Unlike our adult eyes, babies can only distinguish between black and white or light and dark shades. So, it is necessary that a baby is exposed to both the contrasts as much as possible.
- There are a variety of black and white baby toys like:
Black and white wrist rattle
Infant black and white mobiles - Also, you can hand draw black and white shades or dark shades of your own, like:
Chessboards
Various pictures like butterflies or faces in black or red. - Even baby books with lots of contrasting colours can grab a baby’s attention and stimulate their vision.
- You can also create such patterns on your baby mattresses, pillows ,tiles and the walls of the room in which your baby sleeps.
- You can grab your infant’s attention by taping the toys to his/her crib or sticking them in front of the baby seat in your car.
- Make sure that the objects are placed within a distance of 8-12 inches from the baby’s eyes. This is their optimum viewing distance and are easily prone to watching them.
- The development of your baby’s brain is very much dependent on how they perceive the interesting colour patterns around them.
Stimulating vision in your infants not only has a calming and soothing effect on your child but also increases their skills of concentration, increases natural curiosity and helps develop proper brain cell connections.
