Sjogren’s syndrome is an autoimmune disease that cause dryness in the eyes and the mouth. It can also cause dryness in other places which need moisture such as throat, nose and skin. This article gives information about Sjogren’s syndrome symptoms.
Sjogren’s Syndrome Symptoms
- Dry eyes — Your eyes look red and burn. A thick substance may get accumulated in the inner corner of the eyes when you sleep. Your eyes may become more sensitive to light. If sjogren’s syndrome is not treated properly, it may cause corneal ulcers. This can rarely cause blindness.
- Dry mouth— Saliva in the mouth aids swallowing and chewing. The amount of saliva reduces much in people with this syndrome. This makes swallowing, chewing and speaking difficult. Sense of taste may also get decreased.
- Swollen salivary glands — Three sets of glands produce saliva. They are located in the cheeks, under the tongue and in the back of the mouth. They may feel tender and swollen.
- Dental cavities — This problem results from a dry mouth. Saliva fights against bacteria and defends cavities. Because of decreased saliva in people with Sjogren’s syndrome, their teeth may develop cavities more easily.
- Vagina dryness — This may result in painful intercourse for women.
- Fatigue — This is a common symptom. You may feel tired and get exhausted easily and worn out.
- Dry throat, nose and lungs — This can make your throat feel tickly and dry. You may have a hoarseness, dry cough, nose bleeds and a decreased sense of smell. It may also lead to bronchitis, pneumonia and ear problems.
- Other problems — Nervous system, blood vessels, skin, muscles and other organs can be affected by Sjogren’s syndrome. This can cause muscle weakness, dry skin, memory problems and feelings of tingling and numbness.
This syndrome may also affect the pancreas and liver.
