Yom kippur is the fasting austerity observed by the Jews on the tenth day of Tishrei month. It is also known as the day of atonement. On this day, adults are required to refrain from eating or drinking for atleast 25 hours, from one and half hour before the sundown until nightfall the next day.
Yom kippur should be observed with great reverence. When you prepare proper consciousness you get credit for the festival of “Affliction of the soul”. Preparation can also reduce the pain and discomfort associated with the fast.
Here are a few preparation steps:
Reduce withdrawal symptoms: The preparation starts atleast a week before Yom Kippur. Reduce slowly the amount of caffeine, tobacco products and refined sugar in the days leading to the fast. Sudden stopping may increase the chance of developing withdrawal symptoms such as headaches during the fast.
Water: Drink as much water as possible on the previous day of Yom Kippur. This will facilitates digestion of all the food that is taken at the Seudah Mafseket feast (last meal). This also helps in preventing dehydration during the fast.
Fish and poultry meal: You can think of taking sea foods such as fish on the day before Yom Kippur. You can also take poultry food. These foods help you to store more energy for the day as other meats are prohibited on this day.
Do not take heavy food: Take part in the Seudah Mafseket feast. Eat only those seasoned foods that do not aggravate dehydration later. Prepare carbohydrate rich food such as rice and bread.
Brushing Teeth: Remember to brush your teeth thoroughly just before sundown, after taking the Seudah Mafseket. This will reduce the bad breath during the fasting time.
Now begin the fast: Begin the fast with a sincere attitude. Conserve as much energy as possible. Keep taking nap in between and avoid physical activities as much as possible. Do not talk about food as that may make you feel even hungrier.
Happy Fasting for Yom Kippur!!!
